A Full House of Direct Reports

Interesting article from Korn Ferry (A Full House of Direct Reports) about the growing trend of flattening organizational structures by removing layers of middle management and increasing numbers of direct reports reporting into remaining managers.  As mentioned in the article, some companies now expect leaders to line manage 20 or more people.  Whilst appreciating some of the drivers behind this, I think we need to recognize (and consider how we manage) potential downsides.  I have always been a firm believer in the value of dedicated 1-2-1 time with a direct report – to make space to discuss issues important for them and make time to coach and mentor.  In addition, 1-2-1s are fundamental to ensuring effective two-way communication within teams.  If the trend of larger spans of direct reports continues, might we see some talent move to organizations where they feel more confident line managers will have the time to grow them and where organizational structures (being “less flat”) will offer more opportunity for future progression.
